Karnataka Style Poha

3 cups poha

Soak poha in water for 2 minutes. Drain using a colander and let it sit for 10 minutes on the colander.

1 tbsp oil
1/4 cup peanuts

Heat oil in a pan, add peanuts and sauté in medium flame for 5 minutes.

1/2 tsp mustard seeds

1/2 tsp cumin seeds
1 tsp urad dal
1 tsp channadal

Add mustard seeds, when it starts to splutter, add cumin seeds, urad dal, sauté till dal turns light brown.

1/2 onion, finely chopped
3 green chili, finely chopped
1" ginger, finely chopped

Add onion, chili, ginger, sauté for 5 minutes in medium flame.

1/4 tsp turmeric powder
1 and 3/4 tsp salt

Add turmeric powder, salt, sauté for few seconds.

Add soaked drained poha, stir in low flame until everything is mixed. Cover and cook in low flame for 2 minutes.

2 tbsp lemon (juice from 1 Meyer lemon) 
cilantro leaves, chopped

Mix with lemon juice and cilantro leaves.

Taste Note: Tastes AWESOME
Yields: 4 and 1/2 cups
Serves: 2

Maharashtrian Poha

2 Cups Red Aval

Soak aval in water for 3 minutes, filter and squeeze out all the water and keep aval in a bowl.

Yielded: 3 and 1/4 Cups

1/2 Tsp Turmeric Powder
1 Tsp Coconut Palm Sugar
1 Tsp Salt

Add turmeric powder, sugar and salt to poha and gently mix.


1 Tbsp Peanut Oil
1/8 Tsp Salt
1/2 Cup Potato, Chopped into Small Pieces


Heat oil in a pan, add potatoes, saute, add salt, saute till it becomes light golden color, about 5 minutes in medium flame and keep aside.


1 Tbsp Peanut Oil
3/4 Tsp Mustard Seeds
34 Tsp Cumin Seeds
1 Cup Onion


2 Serrano Peppers, Chopped into Medium Rounds
1 Sprig Curry Leaves
1/4 Cup Dry Roasted and Unsalted Peanuts
1/4 Tsp Salt

Heat oil in a pan, add mustard seeds, when it starts to splutter, add cumin seeds, when it starts to crackle, add onion, saute till onion becomes translucent, about 4 minutes in medium flame.

Add serrano peppers, curry leaves, roasted peanut, salt, saute for a minute.

Add fried potato, poha, gently mix with the rest of the mixture. 

Saute in LOW flame for 2 to 3 minutes, switch off the stove.

2 Tsp Lime Juice (Optional)
2 Tbsp Cilantro Leaves, Chopped
2 Tbsp Coconut, Grated

Sprinkle lime juice, mix well. Garnish with cilantro and coconut.


Taste Note: Tastes AWESOME
Yields: 4 and 1/4 Cups
Serves: 2

Spicy Lemon Aval (Spicy Lemon Poha)

3 Cups Red Aval

Soak aval in water for 3 minutes, filter the water and keep aval in a bowl.


Yielded: 5 and 3/4 Cups

1 Tbsp Sesame Oil
1/2 Tsp Mustard Seeds
1 Tsp Black Split Urad Dal
1 Tsp Channa Dal
1 Red Chili, DO NOT break the chili, add the whole red chili

Heat oil in a pan, add mustard seeds, when it starts to splutter, add urad dal, channa dal, red chili and fry till the color of the dal changes.

1/4 Cup Onion, Finely Chopped
3 Serrano Peppers, Chopped Lengthwise, if you want it to be more spicy, chop into thin round pieces
1 Sprig Curry Leaves


1/4 Tsp Turmeric Powder
1 and 1/2 Tsp Salt
1/8 Tsp Asafoetida
1/2 Tsp Black Pepper Powder, DO NOT ADD THIS, IF YOU ARE CHOPPING  THE SERRANO PEPPERS INTO THIN ROUND PIECES

Add onion, green chilies, curry leaves, saute for few minutes, add turmeric powder, salt, asafoetida, black pepper powder and saute till the onion become translucent.

Add Aval and mix well.

2 Tbsp Lemon Juice (Juice from 1 Small Lemon)

Add lemon juice to the aval, mix and switch off the stove.

2 Tbsp Cilantro, Chopped
1/4 Cup Peanut, Dry Roasted

Add cilantro and peanut to aval and mix well.

Sweet & Spicy Raw Aval (Sweet & Spicy Raw Poha)

Sweet Raw Aval


2 Cup Red Aval (1 Cup)

Soak aval in water for 3 minutes, filter the water and keep aval in a bowl.


Yields: 3 and 1/2 Cups

1 and 1/2 Cup Soaked and Dried Aval (1 Cup)
1/8 Tsp Cardamom Powder (1/8 Tsp)
6 Tbsp Coconut Palm Sugar (1/4 Cup)
1/4 Cup Coconut, Grated (2 Tbsp)

Mix all the above with aval.


Yields: 1 and 1/2 Cups
Taste Note: Tastes AWESOME

Spicy Raw Aval

2 Cups Red Aval

Soak aval in water for 3 minutes, filter the water and keep aval in a bowl.

Yielded: 3 Cups

5 Cups Soaked and Dried Aval (2 Cups)
1 Cup Onion, Chopped (1/2 Cup Onion)
1/4 Cup Cilantro, Chopped (1/4 Cup Cilantro)
1 and 1/4 Tsp Salt (1/2 Tsp Salt)
1 and 1/4 Tsp Pepper Powder (1/2 Tsp)
1/2 Coconut, Grated (1/4 Cup)


Mix all the above with aval.


Our Dinner


Yields: 6 and 3/4 Cups
