South Indian Tomato Soup


1 Cup Toor Dal
1/4 Tsp Turmeric Powder
1/2 Tsp Salt
4 Cups Water

Wash dal and cook with all the above, allow it to boil and simmer for 40 minutes. Once the dal is cooked, mash the dal.


1 Tbsp Oil
1 Bay Leaf
2 Cardamom
1" Cinnamon
2 Cloves
1/2 Tsp Fennel Seeds
1/2 Tsp Whole Black Pepper
1 Tsp Cumin Seeds

Heat oil in a pan, add all the above spices and saute till black pepper start to crackle.

1 Cup Big Onion, Chopped
8 oz Pearl Onion, Chopped into 2 pieces
1/2 Tsp Ginger, Chopped
1 Tsp Garlic Cloves, Chopped
2 Serrano Peppers, Chopped into 2 Lengthwise Pieces


Add all the above to the pan, saute for 5 minutes.


2 lb Roma Tomato, Each Tomato, Chopped into 16 Pieces, If Beefsteak Tomato, chop each tomato into 32 Pieces
1 and 1/2 Tsp Salt

Add tomatoes, salt and saute for 2 more minutes.

5 Cups Water

Add water, allow it to boil and simmer in medium for 10 minutes.

1 Cup Water
1/4 Tsp Black Pepper Powder

Add dal with dal, water, black pepper powder, mix well, allow it to boil in medium flame for 5 minutes and turn off the stove.

Cilantro Leaves, To garnish

Add cilantro leaves.
